This article is from SpringerPlus , volume 3 . Abstract Premature implant loosening following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can have several causes. In this article we report on a rare case of a 74 year old male patient suffering tibial component loosening 14 month after primary TKA. The patient did neither have any malignancies nor joint arthroplasty before. Upon clinical examination the range of motion in the diseased knee was painfully restricted to 80° of knee flexion, with the patient...

The treatment of hypercubic lattice artifacts is essential for the calculation of non-perturbative renormalization constants of RI-MOM schemes. It has been shown that for the RI'-MOM scheme a large part of these artifacts can be calculated and subtracted with the help of diagrammatic Lattice Perturbation Theory (LPT). Such calculations are typically restricted to 1-loop order, but one may overcome this limitation and calculate hypercubic corrections for any operator and action beyond the 1-loop...

In this letter we use graphene bubbles to study the Raman spectrum of graphene under biaxial (e.g. isotropic) strain. Our Gruneisen parameters are in excellent agreement with the theoretical values. Discrepancy in the previously reported values is attributed to the interaction of graphene with the substrate. Bilayer balloons (intentionally pressurized membranes) have been used to avoid the effect of the substrate and to study the dependence of strain on the inter-layer interactions.

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Background: Bovine tuberculosis (bTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is an infectious disease of cattle that also affects other domestic animals, free-ranging and farmed wildlife, and also humans. In Mozambique, scattered surveys have reported a wide variation of bTB prevalence rates in cattle from different regions. Due to direct economic repercussions on livestock and indirect consequences for human health and wildlife, knowing the...

This article is from Arthritis Research & Therapy , volume 14 . Abstract Introduction: To date, no single most-appropriate factor or delivery method has been identified for the purpose of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based treatment of cartilage injury. Therefore, in this study we tested whether gene delivery of the growth factor Indian hedgehog (IHH) was able to induce chondrogenesis in human primary MSCs, and whether it was possible by such an approach to modulate the appearance of...

We present selected results obtained by RQCD from simulations of $N_f=2+1$ flavours of non-perturbatively $\mathcal{O}(a)$ improved Wilson fermions, employing open boundary conditions in time. The ensembles were created within the CLS (Coordinated Lattice Simulations) effort at five different values of the lattice spacing, ranging from 0.085fm down to below 0.04fm. Many quark mass combinations were realized, in particular along lines where the sum of the bare quark masses was kept fixed as well...

We present results of the first ab initio lattice QCD calculation of the normalization constants and first moments of the leading twist distribution amplitudes of the full baryon octet, corresponding to the small transverse distance limit of the associated S-wave light-cone wave functions. The P-wave (higher twist) normalization constants are evaluated as well. The calculation is done using $N_f=2+1$ flavors of dynamical (clover) fermions on lattices of different volumes and pion masses down to...

The structure of liquid water at ambient conditions is studied in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations using van der Waals (vdW) density-functional theory, i.e. using the new exchange-correlation functionals optPBE-vdW and vdW-DF2. Inclusion of the more isotropic vdW interactions counteracts highly directional hydrogen-bonds, which are enhanced by standard functionals. This brings about a softening of the microscopic structure of water, as seen from the broadening of angular distribution...
